Mary Ellen Mark
Mary Ellen Mark, was born March 20th, 1940 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was best known for being a humanist photographer and primarily worked in black and white. She captured social issues such as homelessness, loneliness, drug addiction, and prostitution through photojournalism, documentary photography, and advertising photography. Mark received many awards throughout her life, some of which include;
- Distinguished Photographer’s Award, Women in Photography (1988)
- Infinity Award and Cornell Capa Award from the International Center of Photography (1997, 2001)
- Lifetime Achievement in Photography Award from the George Eastman House (2014)
Mary Ellen Mark passed away at age 75 on May 25th, 2015 but is still remembered as being an iconic woman in photography.
